Some people will tell you that there is no such thing as a natural cure for psoriasis...But if you are among the 3% of the population who suffers from psoriasis flare-ups, this is not a helpful point of view.

Fact is, everyone knows someone who suffers from psoriasis...sadly, even children are susceptible to the skin disease.

As recently as a century ago, your pickings for a natural cure for psoriasis were slim...Some of these outdated remedies included mixtures of sea salt and urine (YUCK), sycamore milk in wasp droppings (GROSS)...even a combination of semen and goose oil (TRULY NASTY!)

Fortunately, finding a treatment that works for you today does not neccesarily involve a prescription from your doctor (or wasp droppings!). In fact, physicians themselves will tell you that a cure for psoriasis is typically thirty percent medication and seventy percent lifestyle adjustment. We'll have a look at what available, but first here's a little background:

Psoriasis is an auto-immune disorder that is not contagious. Although scientists don't yet know the cause, psoriasis is believed to be linked to a gene that triggers the immune system to produce skin cells at a rate many times faster than normal. Instead of falling off, these skin cells then accumulate and form lesions on the skin. These symptoms can run from mild (dry skin) to severe (angry red patches covering large parts of the body).

In addition to these uncomfortabe physical symptoms, the highly visible nature of psoriasis can impact your emotional and social well-being. If you have visited a variety of dermatologists who dole out ineffective advice from creams, expensive shots, or prescriptions that don't work, here's a look at some alternative methods that work.

* Keep your skin clean and moist: Bathing every day helps remove scales and soothe inflamed skin. Add bath oil, Epsom salts, or oiled oatmeal to lukewarm water and soak for at least 15 minutes.

* A large part of a successful cure for psoriasis is in maintaining a healthy liver...There are varieties of natural supplements available to cleanse your liver, and I recommend milk thistle extracts. Also, it goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway: alcohol does not make your liver any healthier.

* Daily exercise not only reduces stress (!!!), it increases blood flow to all parts of your body...Including your skin, which will lessen flareups and symptoms in general.

* Cut down on sugary snacks and drinking soda. Avoid red meat and alcohol. Drink plenty of water...At least 64 ounces a day.

* Try to get eight hours of sleep a night. Although, this is all easier said than done, when your body is overstressed the symptoms of psoriasis tend to flare up.

* Phototherapy using UVB light is another safe and effective treatment. The equipment used is similar to a tanning bed but uses a different kind of light. A typical treatment lasts 8 to 10 weeks with three visits per week.

* Synthetic materials irritate the skin and worsen symptoms. In other words, your Mom was right: don't leave the house without a clean pair of cotton underwear.

* And now for something completely different: If you find yourself in a South Korean spa, you can visit the so-called "Dr. Fish" It's a gentle bottom feeder called the garra rufa which actually eats dead skin calls and flakes off the skin of spa patrons...Sounds a little ticklish, but I'll try anything once!

In the interest of full disclosure, please understand that I am not a doctor. My purpose here is to recommend safe and effective natural remedies for your psoriasis...Treatments that you won't hear from your doctor or dermatologist who push steroids or other drug treatments on their patients as a first course of action.

If you have success with these treatments, that's great...I just want you to know that there are other options available without the harmful side effects, and that they are absolutely worth a try.

In the meantime, take care and stay clear!
