Sports injuries affect countless numbers of people every year, pro and amateur athletes alike. The injuries can range from minor cuts and bruises to broken limbs and torn ligaments. Injuries obtained while playing sports can, and often do, affect multiple parts of the body.

A pulled muscle, or muscle strain is one of the most common sports related injuries. This generally is a result of poor, or no, stretching prior to rigorous physical activity. When a player fails to stretch, the muscle is not given the chance to "get ready" for the impending activity slowly. This causes the fibers of the muscle to stretch further than they are ready to, or in some cases to actually tear.

Head injuries can, and do happen in any sport that is played, including individual activities such as running and especially biking. These injuries can almost always be avoided by the use of head gear. While most professional contact sports require head protection of some sort, it is rare to see amateur athletes using the same protection.

Lower back strain is an injury that almost all athletes will suffer from at some point in their sports careers. This is often caused due to quick twists and turns during the course of play. Often, the route cause of back injuries is actually due to a lack of core muscle strength. While, increasing core muscle strength may indeed take a while to accomplish, it will be well worth the time and effort in decreased lower back injuries.

Elbow injuries are common to several types of sports; any type of sport that includes a repetitive motion of the elbow is one where this injury can occur. Elbow injuries affect tennis, football and golf players, among others. Often the cause of these injuries is due to the incorrect position of the body during play. A consultation with a pro can often correct this issue.

Related to elbow injuries are knee issues. However, the reason for each of these injuries is different; knee issues are often caused by a misalignment of the knee cap. As the knee cap runs along the leg bones, a misaligned knee gets off course causing injury. There are exercises that can help to alleviate this issue; however, they are best explained by an expert.

Moving on down the body, ankle injuries are very common in almost all types of sports activities. The reason this type of injury is so common is because all types of sports involve the feet, and therefore, the ankle. An ankle injury can be as simple as a twisted ankle or as serious as an actual break. Unfortunately, because of the type and nature of ankle injuries, there really isn't too much that can be done to avoid them. If a weak ankle issue is known, the ankle can be wrapped with supportive material as a precaution.

While sports injuries are common, they still need to be seen by a physician to make sure that they are treated correctly and quickly to avoid any other issues that could make the initial injury worse. Remember, that most of these sports injuries can be avoided by taking the time to stretch each muscle group thoroughly before beginning play.
