I just returned from a great week in Prague and Budapest and was taken aback at the number of people who commented on how slim my face had become. I didn't intend to lose weight on this particular trip, and in fact my diet would have surprised most, consisting of heavy East European food and beer. What happened I think was I stumbled upon the most interesting weight loss solution yet, travel.
Travel is the ideal weight loss solution, combining exotic cuisine, beautiful sights, a bit of history, and a whole lot of walking. The advantage of traveling to many European cities is not only the wealth of history, architecture and culture, but also the fact that these cities are walk able. After 3 days in Prague and 4 in Budapest, I saw most of what both cities have to offer on foot, and in all honesty, it wasn't that exhausting.
Between 1 to 3 hour sight seeing sessions and directionless meanderings we'd find a local pub for a few beers and local grub. Not exactly your run of the mill diet food. Then we'd hit the streets again and stroll through parks or hit an art museum before settling in to a big fatty Hungarian dinner. Again, not exactly your typical diet menu. And despite 7 days of heavy eating and beer drinking I came home gaunt and belly fat less.
Am I just a freak of nature? I think not. The key lies in the fact that my girlfriend and I were not sitting at computers all day long. We weren't lying on the couch all day. And we weren't snacking all day. We were simply on our feet most of the day with intermittent rest periods for beer and food. And that was enough, without any attention to calorie count or fat intake, for me to lose 8 to 10 pounds in the last week.
So for those of you with a travel bug who happen to be looking for a miracle diet, why not combine the best of all worlds? Eat freely, drink, sightsee, and soak up foreign culture while the fat melts away. Make your travel destination more than just a relax on the beach holiday. Choose a location that allows for great long walks through gorgeous city streets lined with historical monuments. Most of us have at least a couple weeks off per year for vacation. That means 2 to 3 weeks of accidental dieting while living life and seeing the world.
