If you, like countless other people around the globe, suffer from back pain, leg pain, numbness, herniated disc, degenerative disc disease or from any of a number of other issues that can be caused by spinal issues, then you may have been told that you need surgery. Like so many others who suffer from this type of pain, the thought of having surgery on your spinal column is a very scary thought indeed. An alternative may be available for you, spinal decompression. Decompression is a non-surgical form of therapy that may help alleviate or even cure your pains.

Decompression Therapy is effective because it forces the spine into positions that are needed to cause the decompression of the spinal discs. This type of therapy is used to produce negative pressure inside the disc, therefore letting the injury heal in a natural way.

The nice thing about undergoing decompression therapy is that it is performed right in the office and you are completely dressed, which is great for the more modest pain sufferers among us. During decompression therapy, the patient is suited up in pelvis and thoracic harnesses while laying flat on their stomachs, or in some cases, the patient may be able to lay on a computer controlled table, face up. The doctor will then be able to control the table with a control board; here they will input a treatment decompression treatment that is personalized for each patient.

In general, decompression treatments take anywhere from 30 minutes to 45 minutes, and can take an average of 20 to 30 treatments over the course of approximately two months. This is of course, dependant on the patient's particular situation.

Depending upon the particular situation, decompression therapy may include cryotherapy (cold temperatures), thermotherapy (warm temperatures), and electronic stimulation. Your physician will determine if these additional therapies are needed on a case by case basis.

While decompression is indeed a non-surgical procedure, there are still some things that need to be done to ensure a quick recovery process. It is recommended that the patient drink a half gallon, or more, of water every day. This will help to speed up re-hydration inside the spinal discs. Often nutritional supplements will also be suggested to speed up healing.

It is important that the physician's instructions during and after decompression treatment are followed. It is, at times, suggested that patients refrain from specific activities; this is for your safety and well being. Listening to and following the doctors suggestions will greatly increase your chances for a successful outcome of decompression therapy.

As with any type of procedure, be sure to work with your doctor. Your doctor is your advocate; they are there to make sure that you recover from your injury in the quickest, least invasive way possible. If you have any questions at any time during decompression therapy, be sure to ask your physician. It is important that you are fully informed of any and all treatments that are offered and subsequently performed on you.
