Weight Loss Isn't All In Your Head

Sadly, for those of us who love our cheeseburgers, pizza and ice cream and aren't so great about moving around a lot, it has been proven that weight loss can be good for your health. It is an equally sad fact that eating right and exercising can be good for more than just your physical being.

The thing about weight loss is that it's tricky. It's far too easy to watch television or movies and believe that that's the norm. One thing to remember when you're berating yourself for not looking like that, is that no one can do back flips while wearing spike heels and firing a machine gun unless they have attached wires, multiple takes and quite probably a stunt double. They also have personal trainers and get paid enough money to have special meals delivered. The rest of us usually have to work off the cream-filled donuts we had for breakfast.

At the same time, we must eat. Certainly you lose weight fairly quickly once you die, but you're not around to enjoy it. So, a balance must be struck between eating too much and exercising too little and exercising too much and eating too little, or not at all. Some weight loss can be beneficial. Too much can be harmful, even deadly.

Not to mention that a healthy diet is hard work. It takes a few minutes to order a triple cheeseburger and large fries on your way home from a long day at work. It takes even less time to eat it. Making salads, cooking lean meats and making sure you have the right balance of nutrients involves time and energy and is hard to keep up. Especially if most of your brain is taken up with hoping you didn't leave the kid at the vet and the cat at lacrosse practice. Again.

The really annoying part about all of this is what I mentioned above. Eating right can help you lose weight certainly. It can also improve your energy level and brain function. This comes in part from getting the right nutrients, and in part from the overall improved systemic functioning of your body.
The same goes for getting exercise. Believe it or not, even mild exercise can help to mitigate depression. Apparently just getting outside releases a little oxytocin into your brain, which makes it feel good. Moderate exercise will add endorphins to the mix. Furthermore, over the long run, exercise improves muscle function, making your body a more efficient machine and this will increase your energy levels.

Moving can make you want to move more. And, that's 20 minutes you have't eaten anything, which for a lot of us is a real accomplishment.

Weight loss and mild to moderate exercise can also aid in the recovery from injury. So, it means we all should probably try to be a little healthier. Not to look like the movie stars, it won't happen - unless you want to spend 6 hours a day working out or are naturally built that way - but because it actually seems to be a good and healthy thing to do.
