Nowadays, the media in all its expressions, television, movies, internet, magazines, etc. are showing a role model for us to follow that is a bit unrealistic. The women and men that we see in the movies are "perfect", they have no defects at all, they are all skinny, they have no wrinkles, and of course, their noses are all small and beautifully shaped.

Somehow, the idea got to the society that we need to look like our movie heroes. And in the last years a boom for plastic surgery procedures came to exist. Everybody is getting one, even those who cannot afford them. People will get financing plans or even loans to undergo an unnecessary surgery procedure to try to look like a movie star.

For some reason it all seems so wrong. In the back of our head, phrases like "you are beautiful just the way you are", or "looks do not matter" are rapidly disappearing. In today's society, it is not about how smart you are or about your education; it is all about how good you look on a swimsuit. That is the key that will make you successful.

But what this role model is not telling us are the risks and complications that can result from plastic surgery. During a plastic surgery procedure, events like abnormal heart rhythm, blood clotting, airways obstruction, nerve damage, paralysis, brain damage, and even death may occur.

Skin death, asymmetry, and seroma are some of the risks involved in a plastic surgery, as well. Let alone the thousands of unlicensed practitioners who will ruin your life in just a second to get your money. Are you willing to lose normal functions of the body just to point your nose a bit more to the left?

Plastic surgery procedures will not fix us; quite on the contrary they will damage our bodies. Our piece of mind does not depend on a scalpel. The media has to stop this lie, and we need to go back to the idea that no matter how big our nose is we can be successful and lead a happy life.

There is so much more to life than just looks; that is only the surface of who we really are. The society needs to stop listening to this horrific message sent by the media. In the end, plastic surgery is out there just to get our money, to sell us a fantasy world, where everything is perfect. We do not need to look further from our neighborhoods to know that our world is far from perfect.

People need to be focusing and putting their energies in more important matters, not in Botox. What difference does a wrinkle make to who you really are? None, really. Being unique and different is what makes us special, if we all looked the same, with perfect bodies, the world would be a monotonous and boring place to live in. Stick to your uniqueness and do not ever let it go, that is your best asset.
