If you see a physical therapist, they will use the same methods of heat and electronic stimulation, except when you are finished, you often get a deep tissue massage. You are then given hands-on training for performing exercises to strengthen the particular muscles, which will result in a better alignment.
I can say after experiencing both types of treatments for pain, that I found relief and benefits from both methods. The adjustments I received from a chiropractor often provided immediate relief from pressure points. When you are having back pain, you know you can't put a price tag on relief. A visit to the chiropractor can have immediate results for pain relief since the alignment of your bones affects so many parts of the body and their function.
I also found the exercises I was trained to perform by a physical therapist to be very helpful in pain reduction. The exercises strengthen the muscles to prevent a similar trigger of injury or strain.
There's no reason to live in pain since it can affect your quality of life so dramatically. Do what you can to alleviate your symptoms: rest and take care of yourself. See a doctor or chiropractor if necessary. I can say from experience that both the traditional methods as well, as the adjustments a chiropractor can give you both provide enormous relief and get you back to your normal life.
