Are You a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction is a safe and effective method to remove stubborn pockets of fat but it is not a procedure for everyone. Plastic surgeons who perform liposuction in Pennsylvania evaluate patients to determine if they will be helped by the procedure.

What Makes An Ideal Body Type?

Liposuction is an effective treatment for spots of fat buildup. These may remain after a program of diet and exercise has allowed a patient to drop extra weight, and these final few pounds can be difficult or impossible to get rid of. People who are less than 20-25 pounds above their ideal weight can benefit from the procedure.

Although the procedure is not major surgery, it is still surgery. A patient should be in good overall health. Younger patients have better results because the elasticity of their skin lets it contract after the procedure. That doesn't mean older patients can't benefit, but they may have patches of sagging skin afterward.

Any significant medical problem such as diabetes or heart disease should be discussed with the surgeon and might make liposuction inadvisable.

What Can Liposuction Do? What Can't It Do?

Patients need realistic expectations when undergoing the procedure. Liposuction is used successfully to treat pockets of fat such as the "love handles." These deposits may resist the most dedicated exercise program and healthiest diet. Sometimes our body just doesn't want to let go of those last few pounds and this is where liposuction comes in.

This procedure is not able to remove large amounts of fat from patients that are obese. Liposuction can't remove cellulite although it may help reduce the problem. It can refine and improve body shape but can't give you an entirely new shape.

Liposuction should always be done in conjunction with healthy eating habits and regular exercise. When cosmetic surgery is part of a larger plan of self-improvement and healthy living, the effects are better and longer lasting. Patients must recognize this is not a weight-loss technique, but a cosmetic procedure.

What Can I Do If I'm Not a Good Candidate?

One of the most common reasons surgeons advise against liposuction is a patient has too much weight to lose. Embarking on a safe and healthy weight loss program under a doctor's supervision will get rid of most of the weight and then liposuction can be used to help achieve the desired body shape. It may take a little longer, but your body will be fitter and you will feel stronger.

Some patients may have problems other than fat deposits. For example after pregnancy many women have tummy bulges from sagging skin and damaged abdominal muscles rather than fat. Other procedures such as tummy tucks would be more appropriate in these cases.

Anyone seeking liposuction in Pennsylvania should consult with a cosmetic surgeon and discuss all cosmetic options that might be available.
