Our society places an important emphasis on appearances. We know this from looking at advertisements and movies in which everybody is in perfect physical condition.
From their head to toe, these models and actors have worked with every part of their body so it is looking its best. Undoubtedly, this means they have also had work done on their teeth.
The teeth are such an interesting factor in the overall make-up of a person's appearance. Seemingly so unimportant, teeth actually have one of the greatest effects on how a person is perceived.
Clean, white teeth give the impression that a person is hygienic and cares about how he or she looks while stained or yellowed teeth make a person seem less interested in hygiene. Because most people want to give a startling impression, especially one of cleanliness, they focus on improving their teeth.
This is a smart area to fix because it is such a small area yet plays such a large part. Simply by improving your smile you can improve your overall appearance.
As more and more people have sought dental work to improve their smiles a new industry has emerged. Known as cosmetic dentistry, this industry focuses primarily on the appearance of teeth and how to improve them.
Cosmetic dentists can perform many different services which fix specific problems. With any problem, regardless of how serious it is, there is a procedure to repair it.
To start with, if you have chips, cracks, or even gaps in your teeth, you can get a procedure called cosmetic bonding performed on your teeth. This will complete any small imperfections.
In order to perform cosmetic bonding, the dentist will mix together a composite material designed to look exactly like your other teeth. He will then slightly roughen the area where the material should go and apply the composite material.
By roughening up the area he is giving the material something to bond to. This way it can adhere to the surface of the tooth and make it complete.
If instead of having a small gap you are missing a tooth, a cosmetic dentist can give you a prosthetic tooth. This way the hole in your smile is filled in and you are left with a very useful tooth in its stead.
To insert a prosthetic tooth the dentist will take a screw and put it up in your gum line. Over a couple months' time the screw will be embedded in the jaw bone.
Once it does this, the screw is strong enough to act as a root for your new tooth. The dentist will have created a prosthetic tooth to look like a perfect fit with the rest of your teeth.
He will then take this prosthetic tooth and screw it in on the bottom of the screw which should be slightly emerging from the gum. When the tooth is screwed on it will then be cemented in so you can treat it just like your other teeth.
If your smile has lots of flaws that you simply do not like then you can ask the dentist to perform something more comprehensive called a smile makeover. This will change the appearance of each one of your teeth.
He does this by creating many porcelain veneers that go on the front of each of your teeth. These will be designed the way you want them to be; based on color and form.
In order to place them around your mouth the dentist will slightly roughen the outer edge of each of your teeth and then attach the veneer. Some people believe that when the dentist roughens up the tooth he actually saws it down so it can never go back to its normal state.
This is simply not the case. The dentist will not alter the tooth's appearance enough to be noticed by the naked eye.
This way if for some reason, you ever want to go back to your natural smile, the veneers can be removed and your smile will look exactly the way it was. Any dentist can perform cosmetic dentistry because it does not require any more licenses or credentials.
Because of this, it is important to choose a dentist that has an artistic approach. If you are unsure where to go for cosmetic procedures, you can ask around for references or walk into any cosmetic dentist and ask to see a portfolio of past work.
When you find one whose work you like you can begin to have your smile perfected the way you want it to be.
