Our skin can become inactive and the surface clogged with residues of soaps, detergents, moisturising creams, deodorants and dead skin cells. The skin is also adversely affected with the effects of air pollution, air conditioning and a reaction to synthetic fibres.

When affected by these outside influences the skin which is the largest organ in the human body cannot efficiently perform one of its main tasks which is to eliminate more than half a kilo of waste per day. The lymphatic system does not have the equivalent of a heart to pump the lymph fluid throughout the body so it must rely on movement and massage to ensure these fluids flow effectively.

Exercising is one way to ensure the lymph system operates efficiently but another simple and inexpensive method is in dry skin brushing. Carried out effectively and regularly skin brushing will encourage lymphatic circulation and drainage. This will maintain an efficient removal of toxic waste from the body and ensure efficient delivery of nutrients to the cells of the body. This simple but effective system has been used for many years to increase energy and assist in natural weight loss as part of a healthy detox and eating plan.

A regime of daily dry skin brushing will result in reduced cellulite, softer, healthier and younger looking skin, improved circulation and digestive function, increased energy and cell renewal and strengthened immune system.

Here are some tips on how to skin brush effectively. You do not wish to scratch the surface of the skin, therefore ensure you use a natural bristle brush not one made of synthetic fibres. Always ensure your skin brush is dry and that your skin is dry. The same effects are not achieved if the skin is wet due to stretching, therefore you must shower immediately after and not before.

Use short comfortable strokes, not too hard but not too soft and always brush towards the heart. Start at the soles of your feet and gently work your way up the legs using a counter clockwise motion when you reach the abdomen. You need to include your arms, legs, back and buttocks. Also brush your neck and your scalp but do not brush your face.

We would suggest you allow 3 to 10 minutes depending on the time available to you prior to your morning shower. Finish your after brushing shower with a short burst of cold water if you can this will result in accelerating the benefits of your skin brushing and revitalise your body.

Ensure that you wash your brush every two weeks with a gentle pure soap and warm water then leave to dry naturally. Learn to enjoy this routine treat it as me time and you will soon feel the benefits
