Every single person in San Diego wants their dentists to be as gentle and as sympathetic as possible. There are so many procedures that require invasive methods that in short are scary to a great many people. There are many professionals however that take special care and extra measures to make sure that even the most scared of patients are well taken care of and that they are relaxed and confident in the professionals ability to comfortably fix whatever problem is at hand.

There are two distinct types of dentistry that San Diego dentists strive to master these are the areas of sleep dentistry and sedation dentistry. Sleep dentistry includes procedures that actually put the patient to sleep as if they were being put under for a surgical procedure. The patient is completely put to sleep before any invasive procedures are done, and they wake up after it all has been completed. This is used in extreme cases where patients have a severe phobia of the work that San Diego dentists do.

Sedation dentistry is much more common than sleep dentistry, and there are actually a few different ways to go about this type of specialty. The most common method is that the patient takes oral medicine anywhere from the night before a procedure to 30 minutes beforehand. This is not pain medicine, and it does not put the patient to sleep. All it does is sedate the patient enough so that they are more relaxed and less apprehensive about their procedure.

Another common method is taking anti anxiety medication through a mask; this is most often known as nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. This has the same effect as the oral medications, and the only difference is that it takes a shorter amount of time to take effect. San Diego dentists commonly use both the nitrous oxide and an oral medication together for their patients, so if you think this is something you would be interested in, do not hesitate to ask for it.

A third way that sedation dentists help their patients relax is by administering medications through an IV, or intravenously. Although this is the most invasive way to administer medications, the IV method is actually the fastest way, and the medication takes effect in only a couple of minutes. If you think that San Diego dentists might be able to help you and you are interested in sedation dentistry, see your favorite professional today.
