Acid reflux can be a discomfort and if you are suffering from this condition from time to time, it can indeed affect the quality of your life. Over-the-counter antacids are available but it can only give temporary relief of its symptoms, not to mention the side effects of so many pills we constantly put into our bodies. Natural remedies for acid reflux are however available and will give you a natural approach to dealing with this problem.

Acid reflux happens when the acid from the stomach travels back to the esophagus causing the burning sensation and may even cause inflammation, pain in the chest, and sometimes can lead to difficulty in swallowing. This happens when the lower esophageal sphincter or LES muscle is weakened and does not shut properly.

The exact cause of this condition is not known but there are common factors that may trigger the occurrence of the disease, and one of the best natural remedies for acid reflux is to avoid these triggers.

Dietary Changes

Change in your diet is one of the best natural remedies for acid reflux. Certain foods can cause the esophageal sphincter to weaken and may lead to reflux of acid to the esophagus. Although the triggers may vary from individual to individual, you have to watch out for certain foods that may be your trigger. Among the foods to watch out are pineapple, citrus, oranges and lemons. Tomato, tomato sauces and catsup, chocolate, coffee and other caffeine-containing beverages are also triggers that you should avoid.

Home remedies

Aside from avoiding the common food triggers, there are also home remedies and herbs that can help you deal with reflux. Among them is aloe vera, which soothes an inflamed esophagus. Apple cider vinegar is also found to be helpful for heartburn. Although it is acidic, many people find relief in apple cider vinegar as one of the natural remedies for acid reflux, as it is also effective in helping with digestion. Other home remedies include pickle juice. Honey is also said to soothe the damaged tissues in the throat. Slippery elm bark is also another remedy that has been used for generations. Its powder from the bark is used as tea to help relieve from the symptoms.

Drinking plenty of water can also help your body to function better which also helps tighten the LES muscles and allowing it to function better in preventing reflux of acid.

Lifestyle Changes

The reflux of acid back into your throat can also be triggered by some bad habits. Eating large meals and lying after meals are also among the bad habits that can lead you to this condition. One thing you can do about it is to eat smaller but more frequent meals to help your stomach digest the food properly. Avoid eating an hour before bedtime as well.

Alcohol and smoking are also factors that can weaken your esophageal muscles. Avoiding them will not only give you relief on acid reflux but also of the many health problems that they bring. Being overweight or obese can also cause reflux. If this is your case, losing weight may be your best option.

There are actually simple and natural remedies that you can follow. It is wise to find natural remedies for acid reflux as they can provide long-term and permanent results. Take note that if reflux remains untreated, it may cause more problems in digestion.
