High fiber diet is the most common recommendation from nutrition experts and health care practitioner. Fiber has been highly recommended for its ability to provide the cardiovascular system with benefits that includes normalizing the level of cholesterol and blood sugar as well. Being a digestive care educator, I have frequently imparted the benefits one may get from having fiber in the system. One of the most important things that fiber brings is its detoxifying powers on the colon area.

Fiber comes from the indigestible parts of the plant and comes in two types, the soluble and insoluble. Such types are necessary inclusion in diet for its known benefits in the body. More often fiber types are compared with that of a kitchen sponge which dually serves a purpose for cleaning a pile of dirty dishes. The rough side of the sponge can be compared with that of the insoluble one and the absorbent side is the soluble part.

Fruit pectin is a common source of soluble fiber. It forms into a gel when dissolved in water and helps absorb other materials in the body such as cholesterol and unwanted toxins. Such activity lessens the trouble of elimination through regular bowel movements and could provide food for the intestinal flora. When soluble fiber is absorbed with liquids it assists in stool formation and rids off inconvenience that are typically known as diarrhea.

Again the rough or scrubby side of the sponge represents the insoluble type, typically it is also known as roughage. Such type is common among bran, fibrous fruits and vegetables. This acts as a broom in the intestinal wall, stripping away toxins along its path and making bowel movement a regular activity.

The digestive tract benefits a lot when the two types of fiber are balanced properly maintaining a healthy level of digestion. An estimated 25% to 35% of soluble fiber is present in a diet composed of fruits, vegetables and grains along with a 65% to 75% insoluble content.

From a known institute for health, they state that the recommendable amount of fiber in a day for Americans is 20 to 35 grams but it seems that the maximum count they achieve is 15 grams, if any at all. This is related to the Standard American Diet or SAD that people have grown accustomed to. It contains entrees with high fat contents, refined forms of carbohydrates and fruits and vegetables.

Many experts agree in recommending fiber in almost everyone's diet. Having a healthy digestive and cardiovascular system are the benefits that are commonly induced by such diets. Even with a small amount of fiber in the system it is already a great step in having a healthy supplementation.
