Detoxification has become a regular health habit for a lot of people. Eliminating toxins offers important benefits such as aiding in the healing of the digestive tract and the restoration of healthy liver function. Internal cleansing and detoxification done on a regular basis allows one to achieve digestive wellness and overall good health.

The body has seven channels of elimination and these are: the skin, lungs, colon, liver, kidney, blood and the lymphatic system. In order for complete detoxification to occur, each of these must be supported. There are several things you can do to help promote total body cleansing and detoxification and these are outlined below.

Dietary changes. Detoxification requires adherence to certain dietary guidelines because otherwise the process cannot be successfully completed. Making the appropriate dietary changes will prevent the toxins from entering the system. During a cleanse, it is essential to drink large amounts of water as the kidneys need it to function efficiently. Having a diet that is rich in fiber is also a basic dietary requirement. The fiber in fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and nuts will help absorb and remove the toxins as it goes through the digestive tract

Herbal cleansing programs. It is believed that the Sumerians started the use of herbs for internal cleansing almost 5,000 years ago, However, there are many other ancient cultures that also used herbs for medicine. Among the large number of medicinal herbs, about 25 are for cleansing and detoxification. These herbs fall under two categories those used for purification and those used for revitalization. Purification herbs flush out the toxins from the organ systems, while revitalizing herbs soothe and strengthen the organs.

Saunas, steam baths. Bodily wastes also get eliminated through the skin, the body's largest organ, when we perspire. Toxins are released from the cell into the lymphatic fluid because of heat where in turn sweat is produced and the toxins from the lymph are released as one perspires. In heated enclosures
such as saunas and steam baths, sweat is intentionally created in order for skin toxins to be flushed out.

Colon hydrotherapy. This is the process by which water is used therapeutically to induce elimination and is done through repeated infusions of filtered, warm water into the colon. In contrast to chemical laxatives, colon hydrotherapy does not promote dependency, in fact it actually helps tone the bowel thereby allowing it to function normally.

Nutrient supplementation. A high fiber diet which encourages easy elimination may be boosted with the right supplements. Vitamins and minerals, in particular ones with antioxidant properties (vitamins A, C, E and multivitamin and mineral) may be taken to help the body get rid of toxins.

Exercise and deep breathing. Nature is so amazing that even the most basic process of breathing, more specifically deep breathing, helps to remove toxic matter from the cells. The lymphatic system is a part of the immune system, thus it also aids in boosting immunity.
