All of us need oxygen to survive. It keeps our minds alert, our hearts pumping, and our other vital organs working correctly.

Although we can often live for days or weeks without water or food, we can only live for a few minutes without oxygen. Now oxygen bars provide a place to experience 99 percent pure flavored oxygen.

This oxygen has been thought to provide many benefits to those who inhale it. An oxygen bar is a place where you can breathe 99 percent pure oxygen for an average of fifteen to twenty minutes.

Flavors can be added to the oxygen to enhance the experience. Some possible flavors include peppermint, bayberry, cranberry, wintergreen, and lime.

Depending on the oxygen bar customers lie down on a couch or sit down on a bar stool to relax while inhaling the oxygen. To get the most from the experience a plastic tube is placed in your nose or a clear plastic face mask is used in order to inhale from 90 percent up to 99 percent of pure oxygen during a breather.

Customers pay around a dollar or more a minute for the oxygen, but many say that the benefits and fun flavors are worth it.

Oxygen bars originated in polluted places like Tokyo and Beijing. Then in 1996, the first oxygen bar opened in Toronto, Canada.

Since then the trend has spread to various locations such as New York, California, Florida, and Las Vegas. Urban areas most likely have an assortment of oxygen bars located in the area; typically they can easily be found listed in the phone book or through various entertainment newspapers and websites.

Oxygen bars are being integrated into many venues including nightclubs, salons, spas, health clubs, resorts, tanning salons, restaurants, coffee houses, bars, airports, ski chalets, yoga studios, chiropractor offices, and casinos. Oxygen bars can also be found at trade shows, conventions, corporate meetings, private parties, and promotional events.

As the popularity of oxygen bars rises they can be found more easily throughout the world.

Oxygen bars have become a popular social alternative in our ever more health-conscious industry. People who have experienced going to these bars claimed that by inhaling the pure oxygen, they were relieved from stress, migraines, hot flashes, hangovers, allergies, and they had increased energy levels.

There are also claims that extra oxygen improves memory retention, the immune system, strengthens the heart, speeds up the bodies recovery time, relieves temporary altitude discomfort, and improves muscle stiffness. With all of these benefits many want to try oxygen bars to see the personal benefits they can receive.

Oxygen can be inhaled by all age groups. Because of the large span of people it is believed that inhalation of pure oxygen can increase productivity at work, school, and home.

Due to the many benefits an oxygen bar brings, everyone, including kids, teenagers and adults, are welcome to visit oxygen bars to improve their health and increase their energy.

An oxygen bar usually has different types of equipment and supplies that are used for delivering pure oxygen to its guests. The three main types of equipment used in an oxygen bar include a concentrator system, an infuser, and modular bars.

The concentrator system helps in monitoring the oxygen flow and the oxygen's purity. The concentrator helps to ensure that it is above minimum levels.

Another main piece of equipment is the infuser which actually delivers the oxygen to the customer. Infusers can come in modular units either individually or in rows to serve multiple guests at the same time.

And lastly, there are modular bars which are bigger than infusers and help to serve many customers at one time. Although oxygen bars have gained popularity over the years, many people are still hesitant to try breathing in pure oxygen in oxygen bars.

As people get more used to the idea of breathing in flavored oxygen the industry will continue expanding. Those with respiratory conditions such as asthma and emphysema should be careful when using these machines and may ask for the advice of a medical professional before using.

Also, if flavors and scents are used improperly they may cause inflammation of the lungs, sometimes resulting in pneumonia. These are rare occurrences and are often the result of previous medical conditions.

Most of the time and for most people these machines are totally safe and can have benefits to users. If you are looking for a healthful and social alternative to your lifestyle or just a new experience, an oxygen bar may be just the thing for you.
