Every cigarette smoker knows that there will be times during the day or night when they will not be able to have one and sometimes it just drives them crazy thinking about It before it even happens. They might work somewhere that smoking is not allowed or they might have to attend certain functions where it is not allowed. Today the number of places where a smoker can light up are decreasing rapidly. This can cause a smoker great anxiety.
It is a horrible thing to be addicted to something that can exercise so much control over a person. It is likely that many friends and family members have suggested to them that they should quit smoking and the smoker knows it as well, but it is not so easy to do. They might long to be smoke free more than anything, but just the thought of having to lay them down is upsetting in itself.
What those who do not smoke do not understand that it is not just an addiction to nicotine that is the problem with quitting. A smoker can have the nicotine out of their system in just a few days or so. It is the habit of smoking itself that is the real addiction. The habit of lighting a cigarette twenty times a day or more is what they are accustomed to. It is something that has become so habitual to them that sometimes they just do not know what to do with themselves without it. It is like a vital and necessary part of their day has disappeared when they attempt to quit smoking.
A smoker must find a way to replace the smoking habit, at least temporarily with something else. They have to have something to occupy their minds in order to be able to overcome their craving to smoke. This is why so many people that smoke and quit will over eat to fill the void. This is really the last thing they need to so, but it often is. They would be much better off if they would start a completely new lifestyle like eating correctly and getting enough exercise.
If there is someone in your life that wants to quit smoking, do all that you can to help them. If they are very close to you, you will likely need a lot of patience. They might be prone to being ill tempered sporadically until they become accustomed to not smoking. Their emotions might be overwrought at times. You must be there to encourage and support them when they need it if they are to succeed. Some smokers are able to quit all on their own, while others need all of the help they can get to overcome this terrible addiction.
