E Cigarettes The Target Of The FDA

Every now and then, a new device or product comes along that blows people away with its ingenuity and innovativeness. One such device that has taken the world by storm is the electronic cigarette, or the e-cigarette, as the industry and its users refers to them. This device has been around since 2004 but has only started to gain massive popularity during the last few months.

The e-cigarette's technology is simple: there is an atomizer that heats up the liquid solution that can or cannot contain nicotine and turns it into vapor that is then inhaled by the user. Seems simple, right? Each refill cartridge is good for so many puffs and is usually the equivalent of about a pack or less of traditional cigarettes. The ingredients found in the liquid solution are minimal and usually contain propylene glycol, alcohol, and other ingredients.

As innovative as the product is, there was much speculation about the product since many retailers started to buy them in bulk from overseas and marketed them in the U.S. The FDA, certain health organizations and their professionals, and consumers immediately showed concern for the product for one reason or another.

One such reason was the safety of the product. Retailers claim that e-cigarettes are healthier and safer, but how much safer? Numerous studies conducted on vaporizing herbs and substances show that it is indeed much, much safer than burning the product directly. In fact, studies show that less toxins and volatile compounds are found in herbal products that are vaporized, which is the same technology that the e-cigarette uses.

Furthermore, one simply cannot argue that they are not "safer" than cigarettes because they obviously are. The chemicals found in cigarette smoke are in the 4-thousands while the chemicals found in e-cigarette vapor are little to none at the moment.

Some argue that the different flavored liquids will appeal to young children. While the fruit flavors may sound enticing, the fact remains that e-cigarettes are expensive for children and teenagers. Furthermore, smoking cigarettes is what teenagers do when they are rebellious because they know it's bad for them. It's simply psychological and puffing away on an e-cigarette is anything but "cool".

A recent FDA study revealed that the liquid solution contained traces of diethylene glycol, the same ingredient found in antifreeze, which is, ironically, also found in tobacco cigarettes but at a much higher rate. The FDA seemed, to e-cigarette supporters, they were intent on finding any bit of evidence to support their belief that e-cigarettes are not good for you.

Many are concerned that the FDA will ban all sales of these devices soon. If so, shouldn't the tobacco cigarette and all nicotine delivery systems be banned as well?
