There are many methods on the market for fat reduction that range from full blown plastic surgery to completely non-invasive laser massage methods. So what methods work best and what is best for you? Well it depends largely on how overweight you are, what type of fat you have, is it overall or in localized pockets, how old you are and what your overall health condition is.
For those more than 100 pounds overweight, gastric bypass surgery or a "tuck" is often the method of choice. Up until recently, the only other methods for those who had some fat to remove either in pockets or a small amount all over, was traditional liposuction. But with the many side effects and risks a lot of people were too afraid to take the plunge and opted for some of the popular laser assisted massage techniques such as Thermage where the skin is heated with lasers and then massaged with rollers that stretch and flatten the fat cells beneath it. Results from this were minimal and not as effective as liposuction. In 2005, laser liposuction hit the scene and laser liposuction has risen to the number one most popular procedure for fat removal. Laser liposuction in minimally invasive with few to no risks.
Laser liposuction tops tradition liposuction, tummy tucks and other surgery with minimal down time, no blood loss, no scarring and little to no risk of infection. Down time is less than two days and recovery is quick and painless. laser liposuction is similar to traditional liposuction only by the fact that fat is suctioned from the body. The similarity ends there.
With traditional liposuction the patient is sedated with general anesthesia posing risks right there. Then a metal hollow rod is inserted into the skin and moved back and forth to mobilize solid fat masses which are then sucked into the rod and out of the body. The rough movement back and forth to break up the fat and dislodge it causes bruising and post operative pain and blood loss can be so severe that transfusions are more common than not.
With laser liposuction, the tiniest of cannulas (a hollowed out needle) is inserted under the skin through a tiny incision. The laser heats the fat and melts it to liquid form and the cannula suctions the liquid fat out of the body. The movement of the cannula is gentle, preventing bruising and the laser acts as a cauterizer sealing off blood vessels and preventing blood loss. The result is a quick recovery time with no bruising, scarring and blood loss. A Tummy Tuck involves actual knife to skin surgery, where fat and skin are removed from the tummy or other areas to provide a flat look. This is the most risk involved fat removal method and only reserved for those who need skin removal as well as fat.
