Fat Blockers: Do They Work?

Fat blockers. Now that is the name of a miracle drug if I've ever heard one! The name itself sounds too good to be true! You be the judge.

Just what is a fat blocker? It is a pill that is taken to try and block the fat from accumulating in your body when you eat a meal that is high in fat.

Maybe it is a burger with everything, or lasagna or a fattening desert. All you have to do is take this pill before you eat, and, next thing you know you may not deposit extra fat on your body from that meal.

That is the key here. It does not take any existing fat off of your body, but may simply prevent your body from absorbing new fat from the current meal that you are eating.

Chitosan is the fat blocker that is most commonly known in the industry. It is derived from the exoskeletons of shellfish and insects and is also found in the cell walls of fungi. It helps trap fat from the food that you are eating and may promote weight loss. According to Earl Mindell, a leading authority on supplements, "as Chitosan passes through your digestive system it can absorb four to six times its weight in fat, thereby flushing it out of the body before it can be metabolized and stored as excess pounds."

Chitosan binds with the fat molecules in your body and converts them to a form that the human body does not absorb. It is then excreted in your stool.

Chitosan is a fiber rich extract and is able to aid your digestion, speeding up the process of elimination. In order to help this process, and any time that you eat fiber, make sure that you are drinking your 8 glasses of water.

There seem to be no known side effects from taking Chitosan, other than possible constipation. When I was researching information for this article, however, I also did not come across any concrete evidence that fat blockers really work. Sure, the companies claim that they do, although specific studies and evidence were not present. What does that mean?

Even though there are no known side effects and Chitosan appears to be safe, it seems too good to be true. With a lack of true scientific information, it is hard to take these claims seriously. You be the judge.
