Advances in technology are making surgery more and more risk free. But people may be getting into a lulled feeling of false security. Laser liposuction is at an all time high, and while it produces great results in about an hour with little recovery time, it is still surgery. We should not forget that whenever your body is opened and manipulated it is subject to infection and blood loss. Though laser liposuction is a safer alternative for fat removal than traditional liposuction it can still involve risk.
Back in the early 80s, traditional liposuction was first introduced in the US where a metal rod was inserted through an incision and pushed back and forth freeing up fat cells and suctioning them out. We jumped the chance to be rid of unwanted fat, and sometimes ended up with a worse condition than we started. There was significant blood loss, risk of infection, bruising and scarring. Since then laser liposuction or the tumescent method, was introduced and has been recognized as the safest liposuction method by experts around the world.
Laser liposuction has few side effects and less blood loss. The procedure is performed when a surgeon injects a tumescent fluid into the area to be treated. The fluid contains dilute epinephrine which constricts the blood vessels in that area called capillaries, making the surgery pretty much bloodless. What's great about constricting capillaries is that it slows the absorption of epinephrine into the body, reducing its stimulant effect. The procedure uses tiny incisions to accommodate a tiny instrument called a cannula which is the size of a cooked piece of spaghetti. The smaller incisions and virtually no blood loss, lowers the risk of liposuction for patients. Patients have less down time, having to abstain from daily activities for about only two days.
Patients undergoing laser liposuction are not sedated, rather the area is numbed with a local anesthetic. This is another reason that laser liposuction is considered a safer surgery. Local anesthesia has few, if any complications, making the surgery very low risk. The patient can communicate with the doctor during surgery, further lowering the risks, as the patient can express any discomfort. The patient walks out of the surgery on their own within 3 hours after surgery wearing a compression garment to prevent swelling.
As with any surgery, with laser liposuction there can be some potential mild side effects that have occurred in less than 1% of patients that include some bruising, swelling and small scars along with numbness in the treated area. These patients are less likely to suffer any major complications versus those who had traditional liposuction. This procedure is a safe way to get the results you have always wanted in areas such as the buttocks, thighs, knees, jowls, chin, back, back of arms, abdomen and men, breast area. For some of us, no matter how much we work out, that stubborn fat will just not off in certain areas. Once those fat cells are removed through this surgery, they will never come back. This is a permanent solution to fat removal, but does not take the place of healthy eating and exercise.
There are a few different machines that doctors can use to get the best results for you and your body type. Technology in our world is ever changing and lasers are being used in all different forms of surgery from eye surgery to dental work. Laser liposuction uses the laser to remove fat, putting the laser to work in new way.
