Lasers have been used on the body for years, to correct vision, remove unwanted hair, repair broken capillaries in the skin, resurface skin, reduce scarring, remove brown spots and to whiten teeth. Now the laser is being used in fat removal and is making it safer for those looking to use surgery to remove fat.
Laser assisted lypolysis is new form of liposuction that removes the risk to patients. Traditional liposuction is the number one performed cosmetic surgery in the United States. With the addition of the laser and with less risk involved, the country anticipates more fat reduction to be performed than ever before. This next generation in liposuction is geared towards those in good health, who have tried to lose stubborn fat areas to no avail. They diet and exercise but cannot seem to budge fat in certain places on the body.
Laser liposuction is an out patient procedure done in under an hour per body part. The patient is not sedated, but rather a local anesthetic is injected into the areas to be treated. The lidocaine used in the numbing agent restricts blood vessels resulting making it pretty much a bloodless surgery. The fat is liquidized by a laser injected under the skin attached to a tiny cannula with suctions out the mobilized fat. There is little movement under the skin, resulting in little to no bruising or swelling post op. Since the cannula is so tiny, the incision points do not require stitches and scarring is almost invisible.
This non-invasive method of fat removal uses the laser to literally rupture fat cells. Since an Adult does not produce more fat cells, the ruptured fat cells are gone forever. The fat removal in the treated area is permanent. The laser induces the growth of collagen in the skin and an immediate skin tightening is seen. Unlike traditional liposuction, where a patient might experience sagging or loose skin once the fat is removed, patients having surgery using a laser experience just the opposite. The skin is taught and smooth.
There really is no down time with this type of surgery. Heavy activity is avoided for 48 hours and then its back to normal. Most patients experience no pain, swelling or bruising following the surgery and can walk right out of the doctor's office within three hours of the surgery. But as with any surgery, it should be carefully considered and used as a last option after attempting to lose the fat on your own.
