Excessive stress and stress levels which make you feel out of control upset the natural balance of the body.
You may have noticed that when you are experiencing this type of stress you suffer from loss of confidence, lack of self esteem, feelings of depression and lethargy. These feelings all result in a lack of attention to your own diet and wellbeing which often results in unwanted weight gain this in turn only serves to increase your stress levels.
We all experience stress at different times and stages of our lives either within the family i.e. bereavement, divorce and conflict also in the workplace and our reaction to a changing environment perhaps a job change or moving house.
The body reacts to stress by releasing cortisol which stimulates the release of insulin, elevates our blood pressure and accelerates our heartbeat. Also blood sugar levels drop quickly and the digestion slows down which is when at this low point we seek to eat and drink for comfort and as an attempt to perhaps rest and calm our fears and also to seek relief from our feelings of anger and tension.
In attempting to ease our stress we crave foods high in carbohydrate content. Often these types of foods are highly processed and contain excessive levels of sugar all of which will be stored in our fat cells after they have been consumed and therefore lead to weight gain.
Action needs to be taken to reduce stress where possible. Try to avoid situations that you know cause you stress if they cannot be avoided try to prepare yourself by adopting the following principles on a daily basis:
Practice deep breathing (especially before reacting to a stressful situation)
Build and develop your physical reserves by undertaking regular daily exercise
Follow a healthy balanced diet which concentrates on natural foods and eliminates highly processed foods.
Ensure you achieve a minimum of 6 hours uninterrupted sleep each night preferably aim for 8 hours
If you are unable to take extended holidays ensure you take frequent short breaks from work getting away from it all ideally out in the fresh air whenever and wherever you can.
Stress is now very much a part of our daily lives how you deal with it can have a profound effect on your general health and wellbeing. It may be a cliche but life is for living and our time here in the scheme of things is very short and definitely not a dress rehearsal! Relax, breathe deeply, take time out, phone a friend, spend quality time with a loved one, read an inspirational book, be kind to yourself. Life is a gift ENJOY.
