The supplement Cascara Sagrada is often prescribed as an aid to Natural Weight Loss. Sometimes called Sacred Bark, Bitter Bark, Chittem Bark, Rhamnus Purshiana or California Buckthorn. The Bark of the tree is removed cut into small pieces then dried for a minimum period of 12 months before it can be incorporated as a medicine.

As the consumption of Cascara can act as a strong stimulant to the bowel it is often presecribed as a natural remedy for constipation which may occur when a diet is dramatically changed or calories are severely restricted within a weight loss programme. However it must be used with care and moderation as too frequent bowel movements can result in an unhealthy loss of potassium and sodium from the body.

Always check the directions label on the product. Many Health Practitioners will recommend that Cascara is only ingested for no longer that eight to ten days consecutively it is also not recommended if pregnant or breastfeeding.

The use of any bowel movement enhancer such as Cascara, Psyllium Husks and Senna although natural and often considered and recommended as healthy options all need to be used with caution. Often promoted as an aid to detoxifying or cleansing regimes as well as weight loss there can be adverse reactions especially if multiple laxatives are combined together. The overuse of any form of laxative is not a healthy way to lose weight. Constant reliance on stimulants will aggravate the bowel may result in dehydration and the loss of many important minerals from the body which are essential to good health.

By all means do your research there is a plethora of information on the internet. Many Yo Yo Dieters will recognise the hype promoting the next new discovery for fast, healthy weight loss but please beware of products whose only purpose is to expel as quickly as possible any food eaten before there has been any nutritional benefit.

The body will quickly adjust and welcome a new and healthy eating regime particularly if you include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables organic wherever possible.

As always the advice is to avoid processed foods try to remove sugar from your diet, restrict foods high on the glycaemic index i.e. white bread, white rice and replace them with low gi foods brown rice, lentils, wholemeal bread and non-wheat pasta. Eat at regular intervals but try to allow 4 - 5 hours between meals, chew your food thoroughly to aid digestion and drink plenty of water at least 8 - 10 glasses per day.

The benefits of following a simple formula, establishing healthy habits based on good nutrition, combined with plenty of fresh air and moderate exercise will naturally support and promote regular bowel function without resorting to stimulants.
