Chitosan (pronounced kite-o-san)is currently promoted as a dietary supplement and a natural remedy for weight loss. Produced from a starch found in the skeleton of crab, shrimp and other shellfish therefore please be aware that if you suffer from shellfish allergies this supplement is definitely not for you.

This product has multiple commercial uses as a protection against fungal infections, a filtration component in water processing engineering as it binds and removes sediment, it is also used to remove heavy minerals, oils and phosperous from water and utilised as a plant growth enhancer.

Often promoted as a hypoallergenic product with natural anti-bacterial properties,as a blood clotter and even a clarifying agent for wine and beer in that it removes yeast cells and fruit particles etc. With all these benefits you may ask where does Chitosan fit as an aid to weight loss.

Found mainly in health food stores on and off line it is promoted as a substance which can attract fat from the digestive system and then aid in expelling the unwanted fat from the body. The theory is that someone wishing to lose weight can do so without major calorie restriction.

There have been claims that when modified this product is capable of absorbing three to six times its weight in fat and oil. However, regrettably many of these claims have not been substantiated and it appears many of the initial trials were conducted on animals to test effectiveness and not humans.

Weight loss specialists having assessed the efficacy of Chitosan seem to agree that this supplement does not deliver as an effective weight loss aide and other research has shown that unmodified Chitosan could potentially remove an additional 30 calories a day from a person's diet insufficient for significant weight loss.

Regrettably this article although hopefuly informative has found no evidence to substantiate the use of Chitosan. The writer has explored many of the myths and magic formulas promoting easy weight loss. However these products in moderation will do no harm and can often promote the right mindset within the dieter and thereby aid them on their weight loss journey.

Eventually the advice from the majority of long term Yo Yo Dieters is that the rock solid route to a healthy sustainable weight loss is good nutrition provided by a healthy balanced diet incorporating food from all five main food groups, in moderation and combined with regular exercise. Work on Establishing healthy eating habits which will eliminate food cravings and your quality of life will improve beyond measure.
