I carry around 20 extra pounds gained during recovering from a bicycle pile up injury. So weight loss is part of my daily vocabulary and daily thought process. I have never been overweight to speak, but these 20 pounds crept up on me.

Not only was I low on energy, my clothes didn't fit and my lower back hurt at the end of the day. Talking to my doctor about this I was told that carrying around as little as five extra pounds can be hard on my lower back. How? The extra weigh pulls my pelvis forward and makes the vertebrae and other joints get out of alignment and causes lower back pain. And that's with only five extra pounds!

The first thing I had to do was figure out a weight loss program that I would stick to. With so many out there, all with the promise of success, it's hard to get on board with just one. What I did was change my eating habits, not change the food I was enjoying, but rethink my eating habits. Like smaller portions for example and eating slower.

I love vegetables so getting those into my daily diet isn't a problem. Sweets are a big problem for me so I decided to start there, not by cutting them out entirely, just cutting back. Instead of sweets every day I went with three days a week. I found by doing this I am more particular about which sweet I indulged in and enjoy it more.

My weight loss program is mainly cutting back on high calorie foods and getting more exercise. No one likes to hear that, but that's my plan for now. So far so good.

There are few things that are easy to incorporate into your life and have helped me drop a few pounds while not feel deprived:

1. Eat breakfast: When I eat a good breakfast, I have more energy throughout the morning and I am not hungry until lunchtime.

2. Cut back on sodas: I haven't cut them out all together but have cut down to two or three a week.

3. Stop mindless eating: I made myself really think before putting something in my mouth - it takes less than five seconds (yes, seconds) to stop and think. Do I really want this? It took a few days to get in the habit but has been worth the effort.

4. Be easy on yourself. I didn't gain the twenty pounds over night, neither did you, and it's not going to melt off over night.

Making just a couple changes that you can live with, such as getting twenty more minutes a week of exercise and you'll noticed a drop in weight almost immediately. Be patient, don't deprive yourself, enjoy yourself, you'll feel better fast!
