If your vision is blurred, it may be because you are suffering from astigmatism. So what causes astigmatism? Astigmatism is usually the result of irregular shaped cornea and it usually occurs alongside far sightedness or short sightedness. Both children and adults are prone to astigmatism, therefore it is important to go for regular checkups in order to employ corrective measures earlier.

So how do you fix astigmatism? Astigmatism can be fixed by wearing corrective contact lens or spectacle. A professional optometrist should be able to recommend the right eyewear to fix your problem. However, if you do not wish to wear any contact lens or spectacle, you might want to consider an astigmatism surgery. One thing you must note is that surgery will be more expensive and will most likely not be covered by most insurance plans.

If money is not a problem for you, you might want to consider going for a Lasik surgery. A Lasik surgery reshapes your eye lens and a laser is used to make a thin hinged cut into your cornea. Once lifted, another laser will be used to reshape the shape of your eye lens.

An optometrist is not trained to perform eye surgery. In order to have an eye surgery, you need to visit an ophthalmologist. An ophthalmologist is trained in eye surgery and will have the experience to determine the severity of your astigmatism. Then he or she will tell you whether you are a suitable candidate for surgery.

Before you decide to go for a surgery, there are a few things that you must consider first. Some of the things that you should consider are: the recovery time, cost of surgery and the pain level. On the other hand, some of the advantages of going for a surgery is that you do not need to stay overnight in a hospital and there is no injection required. Of course, the best benefit of all is a lifestyle with a clear vision.

If money is a concern for you, you should check out the price of the surgery before you make any decision. The cost of a Lasik surgery is pretty expensive, averaging about $2,500. And you should not forget that astigmatism surgeries are usually not covered by most insurance plans. So it is wise for you to weigh the pros and cons before going for a Lasik surgery. If you still decide to go but have come cash flow issue, you might want to check with the clinics whether they accept installment payments. Negotiate your way out.
