Any kind of surgery carries risk and without taking certain precautions, or finding out if you are a good candidate for certain types of surgery, you can put yourself in a bad situation. This applies to losing fat through surgery. While it may be a catch 22, that the fat is making you unhealthy and surgery on your unhealthy body may pose risk, being informed and having a consultation is the best way to go.
Typically if you in overall good health and at least close to your ideal weight you could be a good candidate for some types of surgeries. If your health is bad, or you are one hundred or more pounds from your ideal weight, a doctor might suggest a health program first before any type of surgery is performed.
For liposuction and laser liposuction candidates are usually there to lose no more than 10 to 15 pounds of body fat in certain areas. They are in good health and have a diet and exercise program. A more extreme case is someone who one hundred or more pounds overweight. This type of situation may require gastric bypass surgery to safely correct the situation, but as mentioned above, a health regimen might be suggested for a few months before surgery to get the body in condition to withstand the surgery.
A tummy tuck is a good alternative for those with more fat in their mid-section and who have more fat to lose where liposuction may be not be a good option, but are not obese enough to require gastric bypass. The majority of people tend to fall into this category.
Most candidates are women who have had multiple pregnancies, those who have once been obese and have excess skin and some fat, those over sixty with sagging skin, men who are predisposed to carry fat in their mid section and anyone who carries most of their fat in their midsection. Generally speaking, this type of surgery works well on those who are within 30% of their ideal body weight, want to lose loose and sagging skin and fat that diet and exercise just has not helped, has maintained a stable weight for at least six months, has good skin tone and elasticity, is emotionally stable and understands that there will be scarring and that there are risks to the surgery.
For some surgery, this type of surgery may not be recommended such as those with diabetes, poor circulation, hear disease, lung disease, liver disease, those who smoke, have a history of blood clots or a family history of blood cloths, those who take certain medications and those who are obese. Also, if you plan to have more children, surgery should be delayed until you have had your last child.
