Hoodia Weight Loss: Myth or Reality?

What exactly is Hoodia and what does it do? Hoodia is a flowering plant, which is unrelated to, but resembles a cactus. One species in particular, Hoodia gurdonii, has been used as an appetite suppressant. It has been popping up everywhere, from local drug stores to health food stores and has been used to promote weight loss.

You will see many people claiming that hoodia is the only way to lose weight. "If you take it as a weight loss supplement, you will see results," they claim.

Unfortunately, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not monitor this product and it is therefore, not subject to the same rigorous standards as prescription drugs or over-the-counter drugs. Hoodia vendors simply make claims based on their independent reviews with no authorization from the FDA. Just because you see a product at a health food store and the claims of better health that it will provide, does not mean that it is necessarily true.

Scientists believe that the appetite suppressing P57 molecule from the Hoodia plant is what is responsible for curbing your desire to eat. Hoodia is found in the desert and has been eaten for hundreds of years by the people who live there. They do not eat the flowers, roots or barbs, but cut off the barbed skin and drink the juice that is inside of it. The dried extract and concentrate is what is used to make the supplement that is taken by consumers. When considering this supplement, is it imperative that you read the label to see what additional ingredients have been added.

How do you know what you are getting? Does the product inside the container match the ingredient list? It is also very important to discuss any possible supplements that you may take, with your doctor. Only your doctor will know how Hoodia interacts with any other medications that you may be taking. The side-effects may be terrible, so find out before you begin taking your supplements.

The truth is that the only true way to lose weight is to change your lifestyle. You need to decrease the amount of food that you are eating, paying attention to the serving size and type of food. You need to add an exercise regime to increase your weight loss.

When you get your body moving, you will be burning more calories. If you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. The fact is that there really is no miracle cure to weight loss. It must be done the old fashioned way.
