You really ought to be taking Omega 3 supplements for your health. The evidence for this is now totally clear. But before you start l want to look at fish oil purity.

Purity? What does purity of fish oil have to do with taking Omega 3 supplements? Well sad to say but a lot. You see most fish is contaminated with various toxins including mercury, PCBs, dioxine and chlordane. That's why the FDA tells us not to eat too much fish.

And fish oil goes into fish oil capsules, so there's risks of contamination of our capsules. Some have, in the past, been withdrawn for issues of Omega 3 purity, or lack thereof.

And so the International Fish Oil Standards (IFOS) was set up to specify maximum levels of arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury, PCBs and dioxine in fish oil.

This sounds wonderful, except all of this is voluntary and companies that make Omega 3 supplements don't need to comply, and can sell fish oil capsules that don't comply.

Now there's more, there's actually at least 4 sets of different standards for fish oil purity and none are binding.

This confuses the issue. What standard does a manufacturer comply with, if any? One company that makes Omega 3 capsules has decided that it's all too hard, and the standards are too lax anyway, and set it's own standards.

And it's standards are stricter than all 4 of the current International standards. On mercury, or example, it's standard is 10 times lower (ie 10 times stricter) than that of the International Fish Oil Standards.

And it's the same for lead and arsenic, 10 times stricter than those of the International Fish Oil Standards.

But of course setting standards and meeting them are 2 different things. If you set extremely strict standards, but no one knows if you meet them or not, then what's the point?

And this company sees the problem. To make it all independent and transparent they get 2 separate independent laboratories to test every single batch of fish oil they use, then publish the Certificate of Analysis that they get on their website so that you and I can see it. Their Certificate shows no detectable contamination at all.

So you have to consider fish oil purity issues when you choose your Omega 3 capsules it's sad to say. There are clearly contaminants in fish and you can also get them in your supplements.

Do this to make sure your fish oil supplements are improving your health, not damaging it.
