How to live a healthy life; that is something for which we are always searching. I found a system of medicine known as Ayurveda or Ayurvedic medicine which originated several thousand years ago in India and has long been the main system of health care in that country. This form of professional medicine wasn't recognized and practiced in the United States until the late 20th century. In this article I will give you a complete overview of this holistic approach to a much healthier way to life for you and the ones you love.
What is Ayurveda? The word translates to "the science of life." It combines two Sanskrit words. One being ayur, meaning life, and veda which means science. This system of medicine balances and integrates the mind, body and spirit which means that it is "holistic" and proposes that balance is essential for good health and being content. Specific health problems are also addressed and resolved with this system. Cleansing the body of all substances that cause disease is the aim. This will help to maintain balance and harmony which is believed to be necessary for optimal health.
There are two main types of Ayurveda: traditional and Maharishi. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center Maharishi is a version of traditional Ayurveda based on translations from the classical texts by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Both types of practitioners prescribe herbs, believe that disease results from an imbalance in the doshas, and use many of the same remedies for treating illness. Maharishi, however, stresses the role of supreme consciousness in maintaining good health, and promotes Transcendental Meditation (TM) as a method for experiencing the pure consciousness of the universe. Maharishi also highlights the need to express positive emotions and to attune your life to the natural rhythms of the body.
In the western world there is a separation between food and medicine but the distinction between the two in Ayurvedic medicine is not as clear. This system of medicine relies heavily on plants used for medicine, herbs, oils, spices and other natural substances. Currently there are approximately 5,000 products included in the treatments to heal, resolve pain issues, and promote vitality.
Our physical bodies are what we think of most, but actually there is more to us than meets the eye. Ayurveda beliefs sees that before we exist in physical form we exist in a more subtle form known as the soul.
