If you are overweight, the first thing you might want to lose is the layer of fat in your stomach. A flat and well-toned abs is indeed something that men and women want and there are indeed exercises that will help you firm and flatten your abs.

It is important to note too that before you go into some abdominal exercises, you have to understand that you have to burn those extra layers of fat that coats your abdominal muscles. Toning your abs without eliminating the fat covering it may not bring in good results to firm and flatten your abs.

One tip that you must keep in mind is to burn fats before toning the abdominal muscles. Burning the fat in your belly may mean getting good fat-burning exercises like cardiovascular exercises. From a simple 30-minute walking, or aerobics, or cycling or even enjoying a favorite sports like tennis, badminton, basketball and many others can help you lose fat, not just in your belly area but also all over your body.

Cut down on carbs but do not totally eliminate carbs in your diet. Increase you fiber intake and find those foods that are said to be 'fat-burning.' They are those that contain less calories than what they need in during digestion, thus will help you lose those extra calories stored in your body. Among these are fiber-rich foods and fruits rich in Vitamin C like oranges, citrus fruits, grapefruits and the likes.

Taking smaller but more frequent meals can also help in speeding up your metabolism and avoid more calories that are unused. Take note too that to maintain a flatter abs, you have to make healthy changes to your diet. Sticking to a healthy diet plan and making it a habit will help you later in maintaining your weight, as well as maintaining a flatter belly.

The solution to firm and flatten your abs does not end with changing your diet and doing cardio exercises. After working on the fat, you can then work on toning your abdominal muscles through the abdominal exercises. You may find many options to do this.

Among the best abdominal exercises that help a lot in toning your abs and getting that 6-pack belly are abdominal crunches, bicycle, leg raising, the plank and some exercises you can do with an exercise ball. You can also do Pilates or making use of a gym chair to strengthen and build muscles in your belly.

It is important to note too that in doing abdominal exercises, make sure you are doing it correctly as many of these exercises will hurt your back if not correctly done. Keep in mind too that in achieving something, especially when it comes to effective weight loss and in the quest to firm and flatten your abs, patience and perseverance are important virtues.
