Dermatitis shows up on the skin as an itchy and inflamed mess. There are many different types of dermatitis. Some forms of dermatitis are still not completely understood.

If you have a rash develop after coming into contact with substances that your skin disagrees with then you are probably dealing with contact dermatitis. Neurodermatitis is normally localized to a specific area of your body. Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin condition of the scalp and is one of the causes for dandruff. Stasis dermatitis appears on your legs and is caused by fluid that accumulates there. Atopic dermatitis (eczema) is a rash that chronically comes and goes. A bumpy rash that shows up around the mouth or nose is known as perioral dermatitis.

In order to discover what type of dermatitis you are dealing with the doctor will need to do a medical history check and take a close look at the symptoms you are dealing with. They might need to do a skin patch test or take a biopsy depending on what they see when they are looking over your skin.

The treatment that you receive will depend on the type of dermatitis you have. No matter which type you have one of the main goals will be to enable you to stop scratching at the irritated skin. Most often, this is done by covering the irritated skin with a bandage or some type of dressing.

Contact dermatitis is normally treated with a cream such as hydrocortisone and then either covered with a wet bandage or left open to the air. Neurodermatitis is treated in much the same way. Anti-depressants or medication to fight anxiety are sometimes prescribed in addition to the steroidal creams.

Stasis dermatitis is often treated with special hose that encourage the fluid not to build up in the problem areas of your legs. If the case is serious it may require surgery on the varicose veins. Atopic dermatitis is usually treated with antihistamines and a form of mild therapy. Perioral dermatitis usually demands a corticosteroid cream and some form of antibiotics.

In some cases, treating the symptoms of dermatitis with natural medicine has proven effective more effective than conventional medicine. Vitamin E oil is extremely effective at keeping your skin from becoming inflammed. Mentha pipererita oil is soothing to the skin, fights pain and also keeps the inflammation down.

The sooner you get to the doctor and get a diagnosis the better off you will be. Itching and scratching will only make the dermatitis worse. Until you see a doctor, cover the affected area with a bandage so that you are less tempted to scratch it.
