Episcleritis is an eye condition where the soft tissues, or episclera, becomes inflammed and red. Most of the time, it looks much worse than it actually is.

Episcleritis is not a health threat and typically disappears within a week or two. Medical treatment is not usually necessary.

Women are much more likely to get episcleritis than men and the most affected age groups are thirties to forties. Episcleritis often keeps coming back to cause discomfort over and over. The biggest medical threat it poses is that it can develop into scleritis.

Episcleritis symptoms are very mild. The most obvious symptom is the deep redness that covers the white area of the eye. In fact, it looks a lot like pink eye. Episcleritis is not normally painful and most of the time there is no discharge. If there is any pain then it is typically very mild and can be managed easily.

If you think you are dealing with episcleritis it is wise to have your eyes checked out by an optometrist. This way you can rule out more serious conditions and put your mind at ease. They will use a special microscope that has a light attached to it (slit lamp) to examine your eyes.

The doctor will want to be sure you are not getting any discharge or have any painful side effects. It will also be important to rule out other eye conditions like scleritis.

Doctors are still unsure about what causes episcleritis. Many times, this eye condition is related to other conditions like lupus, herpes, arthritis, tuberculosis and gout.

There are many OTC saline solutions that work well for treating mild episcleritis. If you are dealing with a little bit of pain then stick your saline solution in the refrigerator and used it while it is chilled. This will give you a lot of relief from the pain that it is causing you.

More serious cases often require a prescription of mild steroids or a drug to help fight the inflammation. Be sure to ask your doctor about the side effects because they can be more troublesome than the eye problem.

Keep your eyes healthy by supporting them with some natural remedies. This way you will be less likely to have episcleritis keep returning or developing into a more serious condition. Roobios and sutherlandia frutescens are key in supporting the body's attempts at getting oxygen and nutrients to your eyes.

Bilberry will help to make the capillaries in your eyes stronger and protect them from diseases. Don't put off eye health until something bad happens. Support it the same way you take care of the rest of your body.
