Sitting down to talk with your doctor once you've decided to have a tummy tuck is probably the most important thing you can do for yourself. It is important to be real about what you expect to happen from the procedure. A tummy tuck can improve your body. However it is not the fix-all cure that you may be seeking. So it is paramount to discuss this with the surgeon in order to get your expectations in line with the reality of the situation.

Failure to do this can lead to depression, which can lead to a prolonged recovery period. Many people get tummy tucks seeking higher than normal results and end up feeling depressed. This depression can be brought on by the medications and antibiotics. It can come in the form of post operative traumatic stress syndrome. The patient may become depressed because he or she cannot get enough rest, being forced to sleep on their back for weeks at a time, rather than in their preferred position. Or they may find themselves discomforted by the onset of constipation brought on by recovery medications.

Post operative depression strikes many people who have tummy tucks precisely because their expectations are so high for what they want the surgery to accomplish. After the operation they find themselves feeling sad, fatigued and suffering a loss of interest in everything. These symptoms usually manifest themselves three days into the recovery period. These first symptoms can last as long as two weeks.

At this point in recovery it is important to listen to your doctor and to follow his instructions to the letter, since failure to do this could lead to more serious complications. Do not neglect yourself, pay attention to what your body is telling you, and most importantly, tell the doctor if the incisions don't look right. The good thing about depression following a tummy tuck is that it usually goes away on its own as the patient begins to feel better and to see improvement in the body.

Being patient is much better for you than yearning for instant gratification. Take the time to heal and you will feel better and look better, too. You need to understand that you are not the only one feeling this way. There are thousands of tummy tuck patients feeling the after impact, not only on body but also in their mind. One way to make yourself feel better, is to find a group of people to share experiences and recovery ways. It also helps you to understand your thoughts and deal with them. Being social is always a good thing for the mind and body.

Don't forget to relax and care for your self.
