A tummy tuck may be the answer to any number of problems located on your lower body below your belly button. You've been exercising like a fiend to build those washboard abs, but nobody can see them. So maybe it is time to free them up by way of a surgical procedure called an abdominoplasty. That is the big and formal name for a tummy tuck. There are full tucks and there are mini or partial tuck. It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

The main purpose for a tummy tuck is to remove loose skin, excess fat tissue and to tighten the abdominal muscles, all in one fell swoop. This is a full tuck. A partial tuck will work only on removing the excess or just tightening the muscles to give that sculpted look.

The loose skin can result from simple aging, or a big weight loss or pregnancy. As we age the skin loses its elasticity making for bagging and stretching of the epidermal layer.

For women, a great way to get rid of the C-section scar following birth is to have a tummy tuck done. Now, it depends on the location of the scar and just how much skin can be removed, but usually it can be done. There will still be a scar or scars left from the tuck, however they will be mimimal and not as unsightly as the C-section scar.

A tummy tuck can also be beneficial in getting rid of stretch marks resulting from weight loss or after giving birth. It depends on where the marks are on the body, so don't expect to lose all of them. Creams and ointments for fading the marks are still the rule of thumb when it comes to treatments of these blemishes.

Giving birth not only stretches the skin, it also strains and stresses the stomach muscles. The doctor performing the tummy tuck works through small incisions to separate tissue from muscle, tightening the muscle and skin and removing all the excess. This kind of muscle tightening can't be achieved in a gym with crunches.

Sometimes the doctors will also perform liposuction in the abdominal area. This will get rid of the fatty deposits that form the beer belly in men and muffin top in women. The liposuction will give a smoother contour and sculpted look to the patient's lower body region.
