So, you've decided to go ahead and get a tummy tuck. How to you prepare for the procedure? What steps do you need to take beforehand?

If you're a smoker then you need to be prepared to stop smoking for a long time. Doctors recommend stopping smoking at least a month before the scheduled surgery. Once the surgery is complete, you cannot resume smoking for another month while in recovery. That is a very long time for some smokers to have to go without their fix.

Aspirin and aspirin containing drugs should also be halted until the doctor says it's okay to take them again. Aspirin is known to thin the blood and can cause excessive bleeding during and after surgery.

A tummy tuck can be performed on an outpatient basis, it will be necessary to schedule someone to drop you off and to pick you up once the tuck is complete. If you live alone, it may be necessary to ask someone to spend the night in order to watch over you during the early hours of recovery. If the tummy tuck is performed in a hospital then chances are you will spend at least one day there recovering, and will still need a driver. If your tuck is done in connection with another procedure such as a hysterectomy or hernia repair, then be prepared to stay longer in the hospital.

The procedure is done while you are asleep, so the first thing that will happen is you will be given medication to anesthetize you. You can expect to be sedated for two to three hours barring complications. If you in good shape prior to the surgery and there are no complications, you may be sent home to begin recovery.

The day after surgery is always different for everyone. Some people suffer no pain while others feel like they've been run over by a truck. Regardless how you may feel, doctors will tell you to get out of bed and move around a little bit to promote blood circulation. Circulation aides the body's healing process. You will have to sleep on your back with a pillow under your legs and you won't be allowed any strenuous activity or lifting for several weeks.

Bruising and swelling and pain will happen, but it will go away given the medications that your doctor probably sent home with you. The bruising should subside in a matter of weeks, however some swelling may hang around for several months. Depending on the general physical condition, doctors will usually let you return to regular activity in three to four weeks.

Unless you gain a lot of weight or lose a lot of weight, your tummy tuck should last for a very long, long time. But bear in mind that age will always win out.
