One of the major drawbacks of tummy tuck surgery are the scars that can result from the procedure. The extent of scarring is determined by the type of tuck that is done. Lower or partial surgeries result in lesser scarring than from a full tummy tuck. Unfortunately, the scars are permanent, but can generally be concealed under clothing. It is also normal for the scars to get worse three to six months into the healing process, before they start to get better. Doctors tell us that it actually takes some nine months to a full year before the scars flatten out and lighten in color.

When a full tummy tuck is done, the incision runs from hip to hip in the lower abdominal region. There will also be some scarring around the belly button as well. This is because the surgeon must detach and then reattach the navel after he works on stretching the skin. The incisions are made to remove fat tissue and excess skin tissue from the area on top of the stomach muscles. The muscles themselves are tightened so that they will flatten out.

Scarring in a mini or partial tummy tuck are not as extensive as with a full tuck. There is only one incision made and there is no need to reposition the belly button. Some skin irregularity may also occur due to the liposuction that is sometimes performed during the tuck. And although rare, bleeding and infection are other possible complications that may arise from the procedure.

Sometimes the scarring is accompanied by bruising and swelling which can last from two weeks up to a couple of months following the tummy tuck. These complications are considered minor and can be lessened by following post operation instructions, which could include the wearing of compression garments. It is also important to allow adequate time for healing. A couple of other things to avoid following surgery include, not smoking for at least three weeks, or taking of aspirin and aspirin containing products. Both smoking and aspirin medications can compromise or lengthen healing time.

Despite the tummy tuck scars, the procedure's results are long lasting and dramatic. Successful surgery can greatly enhance the look of the abdominal region and lower body contour. Prior to getting this surgery it is important to fully understand it and be realistic about expectations of the results following the operation. A healthy and honest relationship with the doctor is important before, during and after the surgery is completed.
