Everyone wants to have washboard abs, those chiseled six packs that shout out how physically fit you are. But six packs take a lot of work. Few of us are born with that kind of musculature and those who have it, are exercising overtime and watching carefully what they eat. There is another way to achieve the beach body/life guard look, it's called abdominoplasty.

Abdominoplasty is the formal name for a tummy tuck. This surgical procedure is for anyone, male or female, who is dissatisfied with the looks of their waists and abdominal region.

Doctors who perform tummy tucks are basically re-sculpting the abdominal muscles, tightening them as well as the skin surrounding them. The doctors may also perform a little liposuction to get rid of excess fat that develops in that area, too. The procedures are always tailored to respond to your personal body problems in order to create the firmer and flatter you.

The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck is the person who is healthy, exercises and already has good and healthy eating habits, yet hasn't been able to conquer their problem areas. Women who recently gave birth and are having trouble working back to pre-pregnancy form are also good candidates for the procedure. The first thing to do is to have a thorough discussion with your doctor to determine your expectations, what you want to achieve and what results can be expected from the procedures that you have selected to have done. Doctors stress that surgery by itself is not enough, because once the surgery is completed then diet and exercise must be done in order to maintain the slimmer physique.

There are many types of tummy tuck procedures designed to sculpt and re-contour the abdomen and midsection. Depending on how deep their pockets happen to be, many people opt for a traditional procedure. Others want a mini tuck with is less invasive and less aggressive. Some people, usually men, find that an endoscopic tummy tuck is good for them. This procedure removes a minimum amount of skin and muscle. And sometimes the patient elects to have extended surgery where procedure is applied in the midsection, on the sides and upper hip section, as well. This last surgery is usually reserved for people who have undergone a tremendous weight loss and need to get rid of massive amounts of skin and fat tissue.

Another thing that patients need to know is that a tummy tuck is considered cosmetic and therefore is not covered by insurance. Some doctors offer payment plans, while others will help to arrange financing. The surgery can take anywhere from two to six hours under sedation and anesthesia, with recovery time lasting as long as six weeks.

As with all surgery there is the risk of bruising, swelling and discomfort. Although rare, some have experienced for serious side effects, so it is important that your doctor be completely familiar with your medical history prior to beginning any procedure.
