Aviatophobia occurs when a person has an extreme fear of flying. When somebody is suffering from aviatophobia, they deal with a great amount of stress and anxiety when even thinking about air travel.

Flying and turbulence often cause symptoms such as sweaty palms, heart palpitations and trouble catching the breath. In some cases, a person might even have images of the airplane crashing pop in their head while others deal with claustrophobia or fear of heights.

Aviatophobia is not normally about the fear of flight itself. It is usually caused by other phobias. For this reason, aviatophobia is not considered a disorder but a symptom. There are a great number of things that can lead to a fear of flying and each persons situation is a little bit different.

You might think that this disorder is a minor problem but, in fact, it can cause a great number of problems in a person's professional and social life. Many great career opportunities are lost because of a fear of flying and it can jeopardize relationships with family and friends. For example, it can be terribly hard to explain why you cannot visit your nieces and nephews on Christmas.

A fear of flying can be caused by many things. Fear of dying, claustrophobia, agoraphobia, acrophobia, turbulence, fear of terrorism, loss of personal control and a fear of flying over water are all things that can lead to aviatophobia.

If you think that you might suffer from aviatophobia then there are a number of symptoms that you should be looking for. Purging, panic attacks, dry mouth, excessive sweating, inability to catch your breath, involuntary shaking or tremors, dizzy spells and muscle tension are all common symptoms of the fear of flying.

One of the best ways to handle the fear of flying is through systematic desensitization. In other words, you will need to keep getting on airplanes but with a set of tools like relaxation techniques and a better understanding about how airplanes work.

Anti-anxiety medications can also offer a temporary solution to the fear of flying. The downside to this route is that it only covers up the problem and offers no real solution. Make sure that you are aware of the side effects and never mix them with alcohol.

Natural remedies are a good third choice and are much safer than prescription medication. Aconite and Argentum nitricum will help to make you less anxious, nervous, lessen your sweating and keep you feeling in control. Motion sickness can be lessened by using Ginger, Pulsatilla vulgaris and Cocculus.
