Liposuction has been around for decades, but in recent years, it has been drastically improved by technological advances. A variety of recently developed techniques help minimize patient risk and trauma, reduce patient down-time and improve the aesthetic results of liposuction surgery. One of the most exciting of these advances has been the introduction of laser technology into liposuction.

Laser assisted liposuction, also known as laser lipolysis, uses a high grade surgical laser to break up and melt down fats before they are removed from the body. The melted fat can then be easily and gently suctioned from the body. This stands in sharp contrast to many previous methods of liposuction, which dislodged and removed unmelted pockets of fat through brute force.

The use of surgical lasers makes laser lipolysis a less invasive surgery than traditional liposuction. Laser lipolysis patients typically lose less blood and suffer less tissue damage than patients of traditional liposuction. Because of this, most laser liposuction patients recover more quickly and with less pain than traditional liposuction patients. Many patients of laser lipolysis can return to work in as little as two days!

Recovering patients of laser liposuction frequently require nothing more than over the counter pain medication. In contrast, patients of traditional liposuction often require prescription narcotics in order to control post-surgery pain.

Because laser liposuction can be more precise and involves less body trauma, it can usually be performed under local anesthetic, as opposed to traditional liposuction, which requires general anesthetic. This further lessens the dangers of serious complications and it allows for patients and doctors to communicate, even while the surgery is ongoing.

Laser-assisted liposuction does more than simply make the surgery easier, though; it also improves the results. Laser lipolysis, with its greater control and smaller instruments, causes less scarring and dimpling than traditional liposuction. It also avoids the problem of saggy skin that frequently follows traditional liposuction. The surgical lasers used in laser liposuction have actually been shown to help tighten and smooth skin, which produces a more attractive and aesthetically pleasing effect.

With all of these benefits, it's no surprise that laser liposuction is becoming more and more common. Laser liposuction is fast becoming one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the United States and throughout the world. Exact procedure varies from doctor to doctor, but many clinics offer a free in-depth consultation to prospective patients in order to help them better understand the specifics.
