A baby brings many things; joy, sleepless nights, diapers, increased laundry and baby weight. Of all of the new concerns that a new mother must think about and deal with on a daily basis, weight loss is often on the top of that list. Society tells us, magazines tell us, movies tell us that we should lose the baby weight quickly after the birth. However, for normal, everyday moms, this just isn't feasible.
However, this doesn't mean that the weight has to be a constant reminder of the days we were pregnant, that is what the baby is for. There are several, easy things that moms can do to help with the goal of losing weight after a baby is born.
One of the easiest, most effective weight loss tools that new mothers have is breast feeding. It has been reported that while breastfeeding a baby, the mother loses up to 500 calories a day. Couple this calorie loss with a well balanced diet and it translates into roughly a pound to two pounds of weight loss every week - just by breastfeeding.
When the doctor releases you for physical activity, take the baby out for a stroll. This doesn't have to be intense power-walking, just a leisurely walk through the park or neighborhood. Walking several times a week will not only help the weight disappear, it will also give you a much needed energy boost from the exposure to fresh air.
Of course, a balanced diet plays a large roll in the ability to safely lose weight after a baby. If you had good eating habits before and during the pregnancy, this should not be a problem. However, if you have a tendency to slip in this area, it may be a wise idea to contact a nutritional counselor or your physician for an eating plan that is made up especially for you.
Accountability often helps people meet their goals. Try to find a friend that not only supports your goals of losing weight, but one that is willing to be there for you, to take walks with, to talk to, to share this experience with. Studies show that if someone is accountable, they are more likely to reach those goals, than someone who is doing it alone.
Believe in yourself. If you don't think you can lose the weight, you won't. It's just that simple. It doesn't matter how many people you have surrounding you, how many balanced meals you eat, if you breastfeed or not; if you don't think you can do it, you will fail. Motivate yourself with inspirational quotes or photos of you before the pregnancy. Locate these items in places you will see them, such as the fridge or the bathroom mirror.
Remember that the celebrities that are photographed weeks after the births of their babies looking better than ever are surrounded by people who cook for them, watch the baby for them and design exercise plans for them. In the real world, it is a bit harder; but it can be done never the less.
