It is estimated that nearly 45 million Americans suffer from headaches and of these, at least 25 million Americans have them recurring on a weekly basis. Headaches have actually been classified into nearly 150 categories, ranging from severe migraines to light tension headaches and everything in between. I, for one, am in the 25 million category who suffers from constant headaches. There is rarely a week that goes by that I do not have at least two headaches-- sometimes they are light and manageable, while other times there is no getting away from the throbbing pain that rips through my skull. These headaches are what led me to do a little research to find out the type and the treatment that would banish these painful episodes from my life forever.
I found that most of my headaches could be classified as tension headaches. These headaches originate from my upper back and shoulder muscles being hunched for long periods of time. I tend to draw these muscles up to my ears, which then makes the muscles in the neck become tense as well. Then bam! I have a headache. I can generally feel these coming on throughout the day and get hit with the full strength of them around mid-afternoon. I try to massage my shoulders and neck in hopes of relieving the pain, but the relief is temporary. Usually only sleep and a quiet, cool room where I can lie down and close my eyes are the only things that have given me even a modicum of relief. It's frustrating because I have been getting these types of headaches for years. Doctors tell me there is nothing wrong and to just relax. Easier said than done. But I have finally found a great way to relieve these nasty headaches-- a chiropractor.
During my first visit, I discussed the types and severity of my headaches and how often they occur. The chiropractor then assessed my lifestyle with regards to my physical activity, how well I ate, and how much sleep I generally got every night. He and I then talked about what type of treatment plan I should undertake in order to diminish my headaches. We decided on a combination of chiropractic care and massage therapy as well as stress reducing techniques that I can do myself at home. He discovered that while I was suffering from tension headaches, I was also trying to overcompensate for my back being out of alignment. He adjusted my spine on the first visit and I immediately felt all of the tension in my back dissipate. It was a wonderful feeling. I then saw the massage therapist the next day and she worked on my neck and shoulders for a good thirty minutes. By the time I was done, I had never felt better.
If you have never tried a chiropractor for your headaches, you really should give them a try. They not only work on your spine, they really try to create a whole sense of balance and well-being throughout the body in order to make the whole person feel great. I definitely do.
