After pregnancy a woman is often faced with fat that they never had to deal with. And worst yet, if they are able to lose the fat, there is excess skin and sagging which can look like a fat bulge in pants or a bathing suit. Many women engage in a work out routine six weeks after delivering and most can shed the excess pounds. But with each successive pregnancy, the skin weakens, the abdominal muscles spread and it becomes harder and harder to get the pre pregnancy belly back.

Some women turn to surgery to help them not only get back their figure, but to help them get back their self esteem. But surgery is a drastic measure that should be taken seriously. Research should be done to find the right type of fat removal and tummy tightening that works for you. Laser liposuction is the least invasive leaving minimal scarring, bruising and swelling and has skin tightening benefits. It is only recommended for those with no more than ten to fifteen pounds of fat to lose and someone who has good skin elasticity. Traditional liposuction is another option for those with more fat to lose but whose skin is still in good condition. For those who have had multiple pregnancies who need help with muscle tone in addition to fat loss and sagging skin, the tummy tuck is an option.

With abdominoplasty an incision is made in the abdomen from hip bone to hip bone below the belly button and above the pubic bone. A second incision is made around the belly button. The skin and fat flap is lifted to reveal the underlying muscle. The surgeon will pull the muscle closer together and stitch them, providing a firm abdominal wall and subsequently a thinner waistline. The raised skin is pulled down tight over the muscle back down the public bone incision and the excess skin with fat is cut off. Then the skin flap is stitched back to the original incision at the pubic bone. A new belly button is formed by creating a hole where the underlying belly button is and pulling it through. The surgery takes roughly two to five hours, depending on the amount of fat and skin being removed.

Recovery time is generally two weeks of light activity while wearing a compression garment to reduce swelling. Pain is managed with pain medication. Smoking and sun tanning should be avoided during the recovery period.
