The best way to lose fat is through diet and exercise. There is no risk and it helps you maintain a healthy and fit lifestyle. But for those who have excess abdominal fat it can pose a health issue and for some it is almost impossible for them to lose it through diet and exercise. For those with this problem, surgery may be the answer.

Fat reduction through surgery is permanent. Adults do not produce new fat cells, our existing fat cells either stay the same, grow or shrink. This results in our weight fluctuations and size differences. Some of us store fat in certain cells than others. Men tend to store more fat in the abdomen while women store more fat in the buttocks and thighs. However, post pregnancy, belly fat is a problem for women as well.

Permanent fat removal of 15 pounds or less of fat to lose per body part can be done by laser liposuction. It is done on an outpatient basis in about an hour per body part and is the least expensive and least risky. Traditional liposuction is another option for larger areas of fat but under 100 pounds of fat. A tummy tuck is a more drastic option but recommended for those with 100 pounds of fat to lose in the abdominal area or those who have lost a major amount of weight and have excessive skin that is loose and saggy. The tuck tightens the muscles underneath and cuts off the extra skin.

The abdominoplasty is performed with an incision made in the abdomen from hip bone to hip bone below the belly button and above the pubic bone. A second incision is made around the belly button. The skin and fat flap is lifted to reveal the underlying muscle. The surgeon will pull the muscle closer together and stitch them, providing a firm abdominal wall and subsequently a thinner waistline. The raised skin is pulled down tight over the muscle back down the public bone incision and the excess skin with fat is cut off. Then the skin flap is stitched back to the original incision at the pubic bone. A new belly button is formed by creating a hole where the underlying belly button is and pulling it through. The surgery takes roughly two to five hours, depending on the amount of fat and skin being removed.

Recovery time is generally two weeks of light activity while wearing a compression garment to reduce swelling. Pain is managed with pain medication. Smoking and sun tanning should be avoided during the recovery period.
