There are many factors that contribute to the cost of a tummy tuck. The anesthesia fee, facility fee and surgeon fee all add up to the final cost. Depending on the extent of the surgery required, the surgeon doing the surgery, the facility hosting the surgery and any complications, the surgery can range anywhere from $3,000 to $9.000.

Let us examine the different factors that can increase or decrease cost. Big city doctors tend to cost more than doctors in smaller cities. Also, more well known doctors such as those in Beverly Hills, California or Manhattan, New York can be costly. Anesthesia fee averages $500 and $700 by itself, and the cost of the facility can run as high as $1000. As for the procedure itself, the more skin, fat and tissue that is to be removed, the longer the procedure time and the higher resulting cost. Some doctors will perform tucks in an office surgical suite which can decrease cost by eliminating the facility fee. If an overnight stay in a hospital is required, the total cost can go up dramatically.

Selecting a board certified physician is very important given that with all surgery there is risk and possible death. However, with more training and certification, the higher the cost of service. Check the doctor credentials and certifications prior to committing to any surgery. There are some who opt to surgery performed in another country where the cost is less, but remember there are different certifications and guidelines required in foreign countries versus those for American doctors. It is important to scrutinize the qualifications before getting on a plane.

Some tummy tucks are covered by insurance and some do not. If you are paying out of pocket, cost is of utmost importance. Tucks are generally considered cosmetic surgery and surgeons sometimes offer payment plans or have worked out agreements with finance companies to help their patients afford the procedures that they desire.

Keep in mind that when it comes to money or your health, it makes sense to choose your health. Trying to get surgery cheaper, forsaking your health may not be a wise decision. There are ways to find a great surgeon that fits your budget if you do some research and check credentials and referrals. But do not just choose a physician on cost alone or you could be in for trouble. Remember safety first, beauty later.
