Most surgeons will combine two or three plastic surgery procedures at one time with patients waking up with a mini makeover in one session. Sometimes patients request plastic surgery when having to undergo a necessary surgery such as a hysterectomy, appendix, gall bladder, or hernia. There are a few benefits to having this done.

It cuts down on costs by eliminating the need to pay for the operating room twice and anesthesia twice. It also benefits the patient who while having to undergo something unpleasant, wakes up with something they like. It cuts down on post operative depression. While it does increase risk, since the patient is under anesthesia longer, it is possible and is done on a case by case basis.

A tummy tuck is most often requested with patients undergoing any type of surgery in their abdominal area. Ideal candidates for combination those in good general health, who exercise and maintain a healthy diet and healthy lifestyle. They are free of disease as well. A surgeon consultation is necessary to discuss which procedures can be done together and the risks to the patient. Recovery time is generally longer in a combination surgery.

A patient undergoing a hysterectomy can have abdominoplasty performed as well. Since the abdomen will be open to remove the ovaries and uterus, the skin can be lifted, abdominal muscles tightened and a skin flap cut off to flatten the tummy. It is performed with an incision made in the abdomen from hip bone to hip bone below the belly button and above the pubic bone. A second incision is made around the belly button. The skin and fat flap is lifted to reveal the underlying muscle.

The surgeon will pull the muscle closer together and stitch them, providing a firm abdominal wall and subsequently a thinner waistline. The raised skin is pulled down tight over the muscle back down the public bone incision and the excess skin with fat is cut off. Then the skin flap is stitched back to the original incision at the pubic bone. A new belly button is formed by creating a hole where the underlying belly button is and pulling it through. The surgery takes roughly two to five hours, depending on the amount of fat and skin being removed.

Recovery time is generally two weeks of light activity while wearing a compression garment to reduce swelling. Pain is managed with pain medication. Smoking and sun tanning should be avoided during the recovery period.
