Reducing or eliminating fat through surgery is becoming more and more popular. Though it seems like the quick and easy way to lose fat and transform your body, it is not always the best choice. Surgery should be a last resort, after diet and exercise over a period of years has done nothing.

The first thing to consider is the word diet. Often times people think a diet is temporary, where they will eat a certain way for a period of weeks, lose weight and then go back to their usual eating habits. This is a big mistake and can cause those who do it to not only gain back the weight, but to gain even more weight. A diet what you eat every day. A healthy diet is a lifestyle change. Instead of dieting, you are making choices and substitutions that are healthier. Using low fat butter, mayonnaise and cheese instead of regular, limiting bread to 2 slices of whole grain per day, avoiding processed foods and high sodium foods, eating fresh vegetables and fruit every day, and eating lean proteins such as egg whites, fish, turkey, chicken and beans. Watching your calories as well as fat grams per day is a way to ensure you don't over eat. Over time, this will become your normal diet. Once stabilized on a healthy diet, weekend cheating is allowed if not overdone.

Exercise is important to heart health, mind health and in keeping the body fit and trim. Elevating the heart rate for thirty minutes per day for at least three days per week will burn fat and raise resting metabolism. Walking more places than driving, taking the stairs versus the elevator and taking a walk during lunch break are all great ways to keep the fat burning engine churning.

A person who lives this type of healthy lifestyle but still has troublesome fat is a good candidate for fat reduction through surgery. Depending on the amount of fat, something as simple as laser liposuction may be performed or something more involved such as a tummy tuck may be necessary. Each has its own risks and costs. Laser liposuction is done on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia with lower costs while a tummy tuck is usually done in a hospital under general anesthesia. There is more pain involved, more scarring and more swelling, but the result is better on those with more fat to lose. A consultation with a certified physician is the best way to make a safe decision catered to your own specific needs.
