Gender reassignment surgery is a serious decision. A patient is required to live as the opposite sex for an entire year before surgery is performed. The surgery typically changes the genitals and in female to male surgeries, there is typically a double mastectomy to remove both breasts. While those are the essentials in reassigning sex, some patients opt to have other cosmetic surgeries to further enhance their appearance as the opposite sex.

Female to male enhancement surgeries can include a chin implant to square off the face or neck surgery to enhance the jaw bone. A male to female sex change can often times includes cheek implants, breast implants and a tummy tuck to remove a typically male bulging stomach and love handles. The tummy tuck can be done at the same time as the genital makeover. Since both procedures are in the same general area, it is easy to perform both at one time. The recovery period will be longer for a combined surgery but for some is better than having two surgeries.

The surgery on the abdomen is performed while the patient is under general anesthesia. An incision from hip to hip across the abdomen and above the pelvic bone is made. The skin and fat are lifted so the surgeon and correct any sagging muscle by stitching it tightly together to create a firm base. The skin is then stretched and pulled tightly over the abdomen to the incision point. The excess skin and fat are cut off and the flap is stitched back to the incision point. Generally the incision is below the line of jeans, pants, bathing suits and underwear.

Recovery involves wearing a compression garment for three to five days to prevent swelling. Pain medication is prescribed and the patient is usually on bed rest when having this surgery combined with sex reassignment surgery. Strict adherence to post operative instructions is essential in the healing process. Getting back on a good healthy diet and walking daily helps speed recovery of both operation sites. Full recovery generally takes up to six weeks with full results of a tummy tuck in six months to a year. In this time, bloating may exist as well as bruising. Since any kind of surgery presents risks and complications can arise, it is important to make note of any significant changes or pain and report to your doctor. Feeling good about yourself is important for your self esteem.
