Cosmetic surgery has experienced a 446 percent increase over the past 10 years. And the patients are getting younger and younger. In 2005, about 330,000 plastic surgery procedures were done on 18 year old and younger. These surgeries include nose jobs, breast augmentation, liposuction and tummy tucks.
Surgery for teens should be seriously considered. Teens should not be allowed to make these important decisions, but rather a parent or guardian should make the decision.
A consultation with a certified physician should be attended by both parent and teen. And the decision to have surgery should be a last resort and only on those who just cannot seem to lose the weight and have resulting self esteem problems. Surgeons screen teens to make sure that they are not suffering psychologically and using the surgery to fix a problem such as a boy not liking them. Typically a tummy tuck is requested in lieu of gastric bypass surgery for obese teens. Abdominal fat is very unhealthy and can pose problems down the road. If a teen has over 100 pounds of body fat in the abdomen and has maintained this weight for at least a year, a physician may agree to do the surgery.
The age of the teen is important as surgery should not be performed on someone who is not fully grown. Typically, girls mature at thirteen and their bodies are fully grown. A milestone of menstruation is a sign that a girl is at their adult size. For boys is it usually older and around the age of 18 years old. The doctor will assess the weight problem to determine the best plan of attack. Baby fat can be lost in the early twenties, but a surgeon will be able to tell if this will happen for the patient. Generally someone who is one hundred or more pounds overweight, will not easily lose that weight in adult hood. And as metabolism slows as they age, the weight can become an even more significant problem.
A tummy tuck is drastic and does leave scarring. While young skin heals dramatically well, scarring is still visible. Surgeons take special care to place scars in concealable places to help teens maintain some privacy. Typically an incision is made hip to hip just above the pelvic bone and the skin flap is raised, pulled and snipped off, then reattached. Muscles are tightened underneath and a new belly button is formed. The result is a flat abdominal area that is permanent. Recover is about two to four weeks wearing a compression garment and only participating in light activity.
