Love handles are definitely not lovable for most people. The excess fat that sits on our waist above the hipbone can cause the midsection to look thick. Often called muffin tops because they resemble the top of a muffin when tight jeans are buttoned on the waist. Exercise and diet can sometimes not be enough to lose them and often times people become frustrated and turn to surgery.
Surgery is always a risk and should be considered as a last resort. Once decided upon, a consultation should be had with a certified physician to discuss your options. A full medical history should be disclosed to the surgeon so a proper evaluation of the condition of your health can be assessed. Some surgeries are not recommended for people in with certain health ailments such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease, nor for people on certain medications.
There are a few different surgical options that range from an outpatient surgery to a more drastic hospitalized option. Patients with less than 15 pounds of fat to lose per body part, are good candidates for laser liposuction. The surgery is done either in the office of the surgeon or in the hospital, but on an outpatient basis. It takes about an hour per body part and is the least expensive of the options as well as the least risky. Traditional liposuction is good for larger areas but under 100 pounds of fat. The tummy tuck is the most dramatic option and is recommended for those with 100 pounds of fat to lose in the abdominal area or those who have lost a major amount of weight and have excessive skin that is loose and saggy. The tuck tightens the muscles underneath and cuts off the extra skin.
Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia through an incision made in the abdomen from hip bone to hip bone below the belly button and above the pubic bone. Then a second incision is made around the belly button to reposition it. The flap is lifted to reveal the underlying muscle. The surgeon pulls the muscle closer together and stitch them, providing a firm abdominal wall and subsequently a thinner waistline. The raised skin is pulled down tight over the muscle back down the public bone incision and the excess skin with fat is cut off. Then the skin flap is stitched back to the original incision at the pubic bone. A new belly button is formed by creating a hole where the underlying belly button is and pulling it through. The surgery takes roughly two to five hours, depending on the amount of fat and skin being removed.
